29th October 2014 - Musicianship Week 6...

Accapella

In this lecture, we worked on some accapella songs. We had a selection of music to choose from, but in terms of getting all of the different ranges of the class into one song we choose to do Run - originally by Snow Patrol, covered by Leona Lewis. Having been part of a choir for the better part of 2 years, I am aware that I am a Soprano. Throughout the lecture we worked on the different parts that make up the song. As it is a four-part harmony arrangement, it has bass, tenor, alto and soprano parts. One of the struggles with learning an arrangement of a popular song is that you want to put in your own inflections and riffs, or you copy things that the singer(s) do in their version of the song.

Within about an hour, an hour and a half, we had learned the first verse and part of the chorus. We recorded it once we'd rehearsed it a few times and I'm pretty impressed with how good it was. For a group of people who at the beginning of the lecture, hadn't necessarily sang properly or maybe hadn't been in a certain part, I think this is a good attempt.
